A network rack and mesh Wi-Fi aren't competitors — they solve different problems. A rack is the wired hub where all your cabling terminates (order, speed, reliability). Mesh is about wireless coverage. The best setup is a wired backbone from a rack feeding access points — far better than mesh units talking over the air.

“Should I get a network rack or mesh Wi-Fi?” is one of the most common questions we hear — and it’s based on a misunderstanding. They’re not alternatives. They do different jobs, and a good home network usually uses both. Here’s how they fit together.

They solve different problems

Think of your home network in two halves:

  • The wired core — everything that carries data reliably around the house through cable. This is where a network rack lives.
  • The wireless layer — how your phones, tablets and laptops connect without plugging in. This is where Wi-Fi (including mesh) lives.

A rack doesn’t give you Wi-Fi. Mesh doesn’t give you wired reliability. You need the right amount of each.

What a network rack actually does

A network rack (or a wall-mounted enclosure in smaller homes) is the hub where all your cabling comes together. A well-built one includes:

  • A patch panel where every room’s cable terminates, neatly labelled
  • A network switch that connects them all together
  • Colour-coded leads so it’s obvious what’s what
  • Surge protection to guard your gear
  • Tidy cable management so it’s serviceable, not a bird’s nest

The payoff is order, speed and reliability — and a system that’s easy to add to or troubleshoot in five years, instead of a tangle nobody understands.

What mesh Wi-Fi actually does

Mesh Wi-Fi spreads wireless coverage across a home using several units (“nodes”) instead of one router. It’s genuinely good technology — but there’s a catch that matters a lot in Perth.

The wired vs wireless backbone difference

Mesh nodes can connect to each other two ways:
