Do I still need a TV antenna if I have streaming?

Streaming is only as reliable as your internet connection. When the NBN has an outage, a storm knocks things about, or the network is congested at peak time, your streaming stops. The antenna keeps working. For news during bad weather — exactly when you want it — that independence is genuinely useful.

The cost angle

Once an antenna is installed, free-to-air is free, forever. Many households that are “cutting the cord” actually keep or restore their antenna precisely because it covers live sport, news and local channels at no cost — and then add one or two streaming services on top, rather than stacking subscriptions to replace what they already had for free.

When you might not need one

To be fair: if you genuinely never watch any free-to-air — no live sport, no news, no local channels — and you’re happy depending entirely on your internet connection, you can live without an antenna. Some apartments also rely on a shared building antenna system rather than an individual aerial.

But for most family homes, the small one-off cost of a working antenna buys reliable, free, instant access to channels you’ll use more than you expect.

Streaming and an antenna aren’t an either/or — most Perth homes are best served by both. Keep a working antenna for free live sport, news and reliability, and layer streaming on top for on-demand. If your current aerial is old, corroded or giving you a patchy picture, that’s worth sorting regardless of how much you stream.
